Worship is the central piece of our lives together at Saint James. We believe worship is a way of living, that it is more than a once-per-week event. We come to expect that each of our lives will "sing songs of praise" to God whether we are working or playing or studying; worship is both a "gathered" community and a "scattered" community experience and both are important to the life of faith. God is the ever-present reality that guides and shapes our lives. Worship is giving thanks and connecting with the one who made us all.

Worship is an enveloping, ongoing experience, and we express ourselves in a variety of ways as we worship. Each of our worship times at Saint James touches different needs in our relationship to God in our everyday lives. We encourage you to explore one or all of them as they seem to fit your own understanding and need for worship.

Alexandria Morning Worship

SJUMC live bandWorship is experiential and tied to our everyday lives. Worship connects us to the Holy which is all around us and opens the way for us to share relationship with God in Jesus. With that in mind, we have designed contemporary worship at Saint James. Contemporary is a catch-all term; perhaps a better way to describe "contemporary" worship is as indigenous. Using songs with an upbeat feel (some you might hear on the radio like Creed's tune "Higher" or Garth Brooks' tune "Standing Outside the Fire") and media clips from a variety of movies, we seek to connect our everyday lives with God, learning together to see Jesus wherever we go.

Contemporary or Indigenous worship began at Saint James early in 1994 with 12 people and an overhead projector. It has grown and transitioned into our only form of worship at Saint James, Sundays at 11:00AM. People of all ages gather in our worship center to sing (or listen to singing), watch videos, pray, celebrate, give thanks, and hear a message relevant to our everyday living. We invite you to consider giving worship with us a try one Sunday morning. See you there!
